Maxine Rice, OwnerHow It All Began...
Maxine Rice, proprietor of the Whitman House Q
uilt Shop, started her quilt business in 1985 as a result of a trip to Pennsylvania to visit old friends.  While there she happened to pass by an Amish farmhouse with a sign out front reading "Quilts".

The Amish housewife who lived on the farm was just embarking on a new venture in the quilt business.  Along with herself she had engaged many Amish ladies to work together to make quilts.  Maxine purchased 30 quilts from the Amish housewife that day and that was the start of a wonderful business and beautiful friendship for both women.

Today their businesses have grown to the point where Maxine's friend has ladies from Amish communities around the country making quilts for her.  Maxine has sold and shipped quilts to the majority of the states in the USA and to many foreign countries.  Together with her friend in Pennsylvania they will custom make a quilt of any size, pattern, and colors and ship to anywhere in the world.  Layaway plan available!

The Whitman House Quilt Shop is the largest in the Northeast, displaying between 100 and 200 Amish quilts at any given time including crib quilts, wall-hangings, dolls, pillows and placemats.  Maxine gives her personal guarantee that all of her quilts are handmade and quilted by the Amish in the same tradition that has made her quilts known around the world.

The Amish
From the Delaware River to beyond the Great Plains and from Ontario to Texas exist many rural communities of North America's "plain people".  They started migrating to North America during the 18th Century from Switzerland and South Germany looking for land and the opportunity to live their lives in simplicity founded on a strong belief in Almighty God and Jesus Christ.

The quilt began as a way for frugal housewives to use left over scraps of cloth, almost in spite of its plain maker's sobriety, as an expression of happiness and work of art.  This happiness expressed itself in their many original patterns, such as the double wedding ring, Tree of Life, Dresden plate, sunshine and shadow, sunshine diamond, partridge, Star of Bethlehem, log cabin, hershey, and the Rose of Sharon.

In view of the tremendous commercial development that has occurred in Lancaster County it's virtually impossible for an Amish farmer to purchase farm land for his many sons; therefore, cottage industries such as furniture making and quilting have become a way of life.  This has resulted in many new patterns, however, holding to the old tradition.

The Whitman House Quilt Shop, originally the Long Nook School House and the oldest building in Truro, was moved to its present location by an old Yankee innkeeper.  During restoration many little shops were created within, displaying a fine variety of other quality crafts, all coordinated and in perfect harmony with the quilts.

Easy to find, follow Rte. 6 to North Truro; look for a vast green lawn on the west side of the road with an Amish buggy out front under the glass.
